December 2011
Scholarship Opportunities
December 16 marks an important date, so everyone get out your calendars and planners!
That day, all applications for the School of Communication scholarship and award applications are due. These scholarships, which are available to students of all majors within the School of Communication, offer a way to reduce educational costs. As a recipient of one of these awards, students will also be recognized during the Awards and Scholarships Luncheon held during COM Week in April 2012.
Brittany Martin, a sophomore public relations major and PRSSA member, was awarded the Caterpillar Scholarship in spring 2011. After learning of the awards through PRSSA, her mentor Michelle Murphy and the School of Communication website, Martin decided to apply.
“Other than the funds, I have benefitted from the Caterpillar scholarship with the honorable recognition of the award, related to my major as a bonus, as well as the opportunity to introduce myself to Caterpillar employees at the COM Week Scholarship and Awards Luncheon. Additionally, the recognition will give me a favorable advantage in getting a Caterpillar internship for public relations, am I to apply for a position in the future,” said Martin.
In addition to the recognition and funding, Martin benefitted from the experience of mingling with professionals during the COM Week Scholarship and Awards Luncheon. She was able to make contacts with Caterpillar employees and practice her 30-second commercial.
“The recognition of accepting the award in front of students, ISU faculty and communications professionals gave me a thrill I will never forget,” Martin said.
