AP STYLE WORKSHOP

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Member Dues

Dues are $80 for the calendar year. Opporutnities include National Conference, agency tours, PRSA dinners, leadership positions, and networking events. The deadline is Oct. 6. Please write check to “ISU PRSSA” 

National Conference

National Conference is a professional development and networking event in Atlanta from Nov. 6 – 10. The registration fee is $310 and the last day to register is Oct. 2. Send flight information to Andrea at alcasal@ilstu.edu.

The Signature Chef Auction is this Thursday, Oct. 1 in the Brown Ballroom from 4:30 – 7:40 p.m. Please wear business casual if you are volunteering. 

Family Weekend

This Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to noon, we are looking for volunteers to be at our booth for Family Weekend. Please email the account if you are interested. 

Development Leadership

Congratulations to Megan Rubinger on becoming Fundraising Chair and Katie Rio on becoming Social Chair.

Social

We will have our first social on Saturday, Oct. 10. The theme is a luau. 

Sand Volleyball Tournament

United Way of McLean County is hosting a sand volleyball tournament on Sunday, Oct. 11. Teams can have up to eight players. Email Ali Seys at aseys@uwaymc.org for more information. 

NIU Social

On Saturday Oct. 17, we will host a social with NIU’s Chapter of PRSSA to meet other members in the state. The social is at Rader Family Farms. 

Social Media

Our posts are reaching about 1,500 people. See Tyler F. to get more involved in social media for the Chapter. 

Opportunity

If you are interested in becoming the PR Chair for ISU Alternative Spring Break, let Tyler K. know. Alternative Breaks occur over the winter, fall, and spring breaks where ISU students perform service project in cities around the US.

SPEAKER

Marketing and Communication Manager for United Way of McLean County, Ali Seys spoke to the Chapter about life after PRSSA and how PRSSA helped her in the professional world .

National Conference

National Conference is a four-day networking and professional development event in Atlanta. Registration is $310 for dues-paying members. Members can sign up until Oct. 2. See Andrea with any questions. 

COM 178 Interviews

Executive board will be holding interview sessions for students in COM 178. Interviews will start at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays before Chapter.

PRSA Dinner

On Thursday, Oct. 1 March of Dimes will host the annual Signature Chef’s auction in the Brown Ballroom. Please dress business casual and arrive at the bone by 4:30 p.m. 

Family Weekend

We are looking for two to three volunteers for our booth at Family Weekend from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Email the account if you are interested.

“WHAT NOT TO WEAR” WORKSHOP

Members learned appropriate attire for speakers, panels, and agency tours.  

Tips for appropriate attire:

Ladies:
• Avoid distracting jewelry
• Be mindful of skirt and dress lengths
• Be mindful of shoe height 
• Keep make-up natural

Men:
• Match shoes and belt
• Keep hair trimmed and neat 
• Tuck in your shirt

National Conference

National Conference is November 6 – 10 in Atlanta. Dues-paying members can register for $310 until Oct. 2. Hotel cost is around $200. Airfare is around $100. Food ranges from $150 to $300. 

Leadership Positions

The vice president application is due tonight at midnight. Apply by submitting a cover letter and resume in one .pdf file to the account. Interviews will be on Thursday, Sept. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. 

PRogressive Image Executives

Congratulations to Yessenia Nunez as the account executive, Allie Keck as the assistant account executive, and Imani Henry as the art director for United Way of McLean County.

COM 178 Interviews 

For students currently taking COM 178, interviews with  executive board start next Tuesday, Sept. 22. 

Internship Fair

On Wednesday, Sept. 16 from 4 to 7 p.m., The Career Center will host an internship fair. Members are able to learn about multiple internship opportunities and network with professionals.  

Potbelly Fundraiser

 On Tuesday, Sept. 22, PRSSA will have a fundraiser at Potbelly. Present your flyer for 25 percent of your meal go toward National Conference. 

PRSA Dinner

The first PRSA dinner of the semester will be on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Please give your money to Andrea by Sept. 16. We will leave the bone circle drive at 4:30 p.m. 

Tour

The first tour of the year will be on Friday, Sept. 25. We will be visiting State Farm and Caterpillar. Members need to bring $10 for gas.

MEET OUR PROGRESSIVE IMAGE CLIENTS

Progressive Image (PRi) clients presented their organization during Chapter. This year’s clients include TV-10, BraiZe, and United Way of McLean County.

National Conference
 
National Conference run from November 6 to 10 and is $310 for dues-paying members. Members can sign up until October 2. See Andrea with any questions. 

Leadership Positions

Applications for leadership positions are due Tuesday, Sept. 8 at midnight. Members can apply by sending in a cover letter and resume to the account. 

ISU Football Concessions 

We are still looking for volunteers for concessions stands on Saturday, Sept. 12. Volunteers need to wear black pants and closed-toed shoes. All funds will go toward National Conference. Concessions will provide members with a shirt and a hat. 

Mentor-Mentee Social

On Sunday, Sept. 13 at noon, there will be a mentor-mentee social at Krista’s apartment. Her apartment is located at 603 S. Main St. Apartment 1. There will be a reveal of mentors and mentees. Please bring the food you signed up for. 

Volunteer Opportunity

On Tuesday, Sept. 15, United Way of McLean County is looking for volunteers for a change drive at the McDonald’s on Main Street. Members can sign up for one-hour time slots from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. See Tyler K. with any questions. 

Speaker 

Sherri Fishman, President and Owner of Fishman Public Relations will speak in COM 178 at 9:35 a.m. in CVA 145. Fishman will speak about agency public relations. 

Potbelly Fundraiser

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, PRSSA is having a National Conference fundraiser at Potbelly on Main Street. 25 percent of a meal will go to National Conference when members present the flyer. 

PRSA Dinner

The first Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) dinner will be on Wednesday, Sept. 23. We will be leaving at 4:30 p.m. at the Bone circle drive. This is a great networking event for members and to learn more about public relations. Talk to Andrea with any questions.

March of Dimes

Returning members are mentors. New members are mentees. Members can sign up after Chapter.

Committees

PRogressive Image is a student-run public relations firm with three real world clients. This year’s clients include TV-10, United Way of McLean County, and BraiZe. Relations committee produces the Chapter blog, newsletter, alumni chair, and graphic design team. Development Committee oversees Chapter socials and fundraisers.


Leadership opportunities

In the relations committee, the newsletter, blog, alumni, and graphic design chairs are open. In development, the social and fundraiser chairs are open. Progressive Image is looking for account executives for its clients. Applications are due Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. Email resume and cover letter including top three positions in one .pdf file to prssa@ilstu.edu.  

National Conference

National Conference is a professional development event in Atlanta from Nov. 6 – 10. The registration cost is $310 for dues-paying members plus airfare, hotel, and spending money.  Members can register until Friday, Oct. 2.

Tee Shirt Quilt

Bring your unused ISU shirts to Andrea. Members can receive one MIP per tee shirt. The quilt raffle helps raise money for the Chapter.

National Conference Fundraising

We are looking for volunteers for the football concession stands on Saturday Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday Oct. 3 at noon. Sign-up available after Chapter. Please bring closed toe shows and black pants to work.

Volunteer Opportunity

The March of Dimes is hosting their annual Signature Chef’s Auction on Thursday, Oct. 1 in the Brown Ballroom. They are looking for volunteers from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. See Tyler Krivich for more details.
 
Study Abroad in the Netherlands

Students are able to study abroad at Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen. The courses will explore intercultural competence and communication, the legal, financial, and political aspects of the Eurozone and European cultures from a business perspective. Contact Dr. Smudde with any questions.

Member Incentive Points (MIPs)

Members can earn MIPs by being involved. Members can win Member of the Week, Member of the Month, Member of the Semester and Member of the Year. 

Breakdown of MIPs
•      1 point: Attending meetings (Point value increases by one for each meeting they go to in a row. Starts back at 1 when they miss a meeting); Retweets/shares of PRSSA social media posts
•      3 points: Article written for newsletter/blog
•      5 points: Attending socials; Volunteering for fundraising events (per slot)
•      10 points: Attending agency tours (+ 10 for driving)
•      15 points: Perfect attendance at Chapter meetings (end of semester)
•      25 points: Attending PRSA dinners
•      30 points: Attending Regional Conference
•      50 points: Attending National Conference
