Here is a summary of his presentation: Do: 1. Personalize connection requests 2. Use a professional headshot for a profile picture 3. Keep it professional 4. Use your resume as a tool to build your profile 5. Message people you have common interests with in a professional way 6. Upload projects 7. Include part-time jobs Don’t: 1. Send spam messages 2. ANNOUNCEMENTS New Member Night Thank you for all who came to the new member night. Career Triathlon The Career Triathlon kicked off with the LinkedIn workshop. Practice your job search skills before the real race begins with the chance to win professional headshots, a phone car charger, a padfolio, and more. The Triathlon is broken up into three phases, which each last one week. Phase One is the LinkedIn Workshop and opened Tuesday, Jan. 20. Phase Two is the Mock Job Application and opens next Tuesday, Jan 27. Phase Three is the Mock Interview and opens Tuesday, Feb. 3. Winners will be announced at the closing ceremony Tuesday, Feb. 17. Member will receive ten MIPs for completion of the first phase and five per phase after that. Instructions: 1. Create a LinkedIn profile (if you already have one, you’ve completed this requirement) (deadline: Jan. 27) 2. Apply for a mock job application through the Career Center website (deadline: Feb. 3) a. Go to: careercenter.IllinoisState.edu b. Click “Hire a Redbird” (first tab on the top left of home page) c. Under “Current Students,” click “Student Login.” d. In the Search box at the top of the page, type “Triathlon” e. There are two “positions” you can apply for: Corporate Job or Weber Shandwick Agency Internship f. Select one, and submit your resume and cover letter (note: you must upload these in one file to your profile in the Hire a Redbird database) 3. Complete a mock job interview through Interview Stream (deadline: Feb. 10) a. From the Career Center homepage, click “Students” (second tab from the left on the top of the page) b. Click “Interviewing” c. In the pink box on the top right of the page, click “InterviewStream” d. If this is your first time using the service, you will need to create a profile. e. Once signed in, click “Conduct an Interview” f. Choose the “Take Premade Interview” option g. Find the “Career Triathlon” interview (bottom of page) Get Involved Interviews Executive board members will only be available before Chapter at 7:30 p.m. on the following days: Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 10, Feb. 17, Feb. 24, March 3, and March 17 for the COM 178 Get Involved project. Executive board members will not be available other times unless special accommodations are needed. Young Alumni Panel The Young Alumni Panel is next Chapter Tuesday, Jan. 27, in SCH 130. The panelists are Abby Brennan ’14, Bruce Kennedy ’13, Hailey Lanier ’14, and Kaitie Ries ’13. Gift of Hope Gift of Hope is a campus competition to increase awareness on organ and tissue donation. Winners are announced at the 2015 National Conference in Atlanta. Teams will partner with Gift of Hope to plan an event in April. We are looking for a group of three to five members. Please provide a paragraph on why you want to be a part of the team and your resume emailed to prssa@ilstu.edu in one PDF by Friday, Jan. 30 at midnight. Ask Ali Seys (anseys@ilstu.edu) if you have any questions. WinterFest WinterFest is from 4 to 6 p.m. next Wednesday, Jan. 28, in the Bone Student Center. Slots are available to sign up in half hour shifts. Please wear a PRSSA shirt and jeans. Do not wear sweats unless they say PRSSA. Members will receive 5 MIPs per shift. Email the account if you are interested in volunteering to see if slots are still available. Regional Conference The Loop Chicago: DIVERGENT is Saturday, March 21 in Chicago and hosted by Columbia College Chicago and Loyola University Chicago. The cost is $30, and the deadline to register is March 9. For more information, visit theloopchicago.com. National Assembly National Assembly is March 12-15 in Portland, Ore. This event is during spring break. Please send your resume and cover letter in one PDF to prssa@ilstu.edu by Friday, Jan. 23 at midnight. If selected to attend, your flight and hotel are covered. Dues The deadline for dues is Tuesday, Feb. 17. It is only $80 for the calendar year and includes opportunities such as National Conference, agency tours, PRSA dinners, leadership positions, and networking events. Former PRSSA members within two years of college may pay a reduced fee of $60 for PRSA membership. Learn more at prsa.org/JoinUs. Mentor-Mentee The sign-up sheet to join the mentor-mentee program will be available until next week. It is a great way to meet new members in the Chapter. Apparel If you ordered apparel during the fall semester, please bring your money to Lauren and pick it up. Member of the Week Congratulations to Kimi Sanden for being member of the week! Sanden earned the most MIPs by staying involved and writing for the relations committee. Campus Clean Up We are cleaning up the quad this Sunday, Jan. 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or whenever the garbage bags are full. The Chapter will supply the garbage bags. Innovation & Influence Innovation & Influence: A Social Media Forum is from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 at DePaul’s Loop Campus (14 E. Jackson, Chicago, IL). Before Friday, Feb. 6, registration is $12 and is $15 after that. Volunteer Opportunities Faith in Action is holding an auction fundraiser from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Regency Hotel. Food will be provided. At least one student is needed to attend training Jan. 22 from 11 a.m. to noon.
